In 2010, Cathy Yan penned a piece for the Wall Street Journal about rookie directors breaking through in the film industry. A decade later, the former reporter isn't just writing about directors, she is one.

Yan's latest film, Birds of Prey, is a follow-up to the DC Comics blockbuster Suicide Squad. The film follows the anti-hero Harley Quinn, played by Margot Robbie, after her explosive breakup with Joker as she joins forces with other female superheroes.

What makes Yan's story even more remarkable is that Birds of Prey is only her second feature film. She joined q guest host Laurie Brown to break down her rapid rise from Wall Street Journal reporter to Hollywood director.

Birds of Prey opens in theatres today.
