'If something makes us laugh, we just go with it': Andy Samberg on his comedy writing instincts

Andy Samberg is known for his tenure on Saturday Night Live and the police comedy Brooklyn Nine-Nine but recently he has been trying his hand at mockumentaries like 2016's Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping.

Samberg starred and created in his latest project, HBO's Tour de Pharmacy, because he wants to make people laugh at the same things he and his comedy troupe, Lonely Island, laugh at — a sense of humour that's built from the years of friendship they've shared since high school.

The new mockumentary pokes fun at how often doping shows up in the world of professional cycling. It comprises talking-head interviews, archival footage and serious narration. It even features guest appearances from Lance Armstrong and Mike Tyson. 

Samberg talks to q about the origins of his relationship with his Lonely Island cohorts, Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone, who have produced hit songs such as "I'm on a Boat" and "Dick in a Box."
