Senator Al Franken is known as both a politician and comedian. From the 1970s onwards, Franken was a writer and performer on Saturday Night Live for 20 years and since 2008 he has been a politician in the U.S. Senate. Franken reflects on the contrasting skills and instincts he has developed in both roles in his candid new memoir, Al Franken, Giant of the Senate (out now).

Tom Power talks to Franken about making the move from the SNL stage to the corridors of power in Washington, D.C., and how his comedy career has helped him in the Senate.

He also discusses the tension of mixing comedy and politics and provides insight into the present-day reality of the United States under President Trump.
