How author Tom Perrotta exposes erotic life in the American suburbs

Over the years, the Mrs. Robinson character from Dustin Hoffman's 1967 film The Graduate has been reincarnated as Stifler's Mom in American Pie and Gabrielle in the TV series Desperate Housewives. Now, she's been given another update as Mrs. Fletcher in the new novel by Tom Perrotta.          

Perrotta has a knack for writing books so well-observed we want to watch them onscreen, including The Leftovers, Election, and Little Children.

In Mrs. Fletcher, he returns to familiar ground: erotic life in the American suburbs — but this time he looks at how technology is reshaping our sexuality.

Mrs. Fletcher, otherwise known as Eve, is a 40-something divorcée who's supposed to be enjoying her new life as an empty-nester. But she somehow finds herself addicted to a certain genre of online porn.
