Here are the winners of the Canadian Music Class Challenge 2016
For the past two months, music classes from across Canada have been submitting their performances to CBC Music's Canadian Music Class Challenge, for a chance at winning a high-tech classroom studio. Tom Power talks to two high school contenders to find out why they think they deserve to win before surprising them a special announcement.
Taurian Teelucksingh, a grade 12 student from Mayfield Secondary School in Caledon, Ontario and Jayd Murtland, a grade 10 student at St. Francis Junior High and Catholic Central High School in Lethbridge, Alberta are in for a surprise. Teelucksingh's school entered the high school vocal category with a performance of Shawn Mendes' "Stitches," while Murtland and her classmates played The Tragically Hip's "Ahead By A Century" for the high school instrumental division.
"We were totally down to sing anything pop," says Teelucksingh on his school's choice to sing "Stitches". "I know it by heart," admits Murtland of The Tragically Hip's "Ahead By A Century." She plays the steelpan in her school's rendition of the song.
Scott Helman, the Canadian singer-songwriter behind "Bungalow" joined Tom in studio to announce Teelucksingh's Mayfield Secondary School and Murtland's St. Francis Junior High and Catholic Central High School as winners of CBC Music's Canadian Music Class Challenge. Both Teelucksingh and Murtland were very happily surprised.
