Sharon Horgan finds humour in the darkest corners of relationships

Divorce has been listed as one of the most stressful things someone can go through in life, but Sharon Horgan wants us to laugh at it instead of dwelling in its sadness. 

Horgan, best known for her critically-acclaimed British TV series Catastrophe, is the creator of HBO's newest show Divorce. "It's quite a harsh take on a relationship but it's a relationship that has completely broken down," Horgan warns viewers. "The clue is in the title."  

The show follows a long, drawn-out divorce between a married couple played by Sarah Jessica Parker and Thomas Haden Church. Horgan herself has never gone through a divorce but researched by speaking with friends and lawyers. 

"I do think people enjoy watching other people's pain," Horgan argues, adding that absurd things often come out of difficult situations. "I think our comedies these days can do a lot more; I think you're allowed to tell stories in comedies now."
