Gail Asper on criticism of Canada's new human rights museum
This weekend marks the opening of the Canadian Museum for Human Rights, Canada's first national museum outside the capital region of Ottawa.
The museum was envisioned more than a decade ago by late philanthropist and media magnate Israel Asper. Although he didn't live to see his dream realized, his daughter Gail Asper was instrumental in creation.
The Asper Foundation president joins Jian to reflect on the challenging journey to opening day, her team's contentious curatorial decisions, and how she responds to critics who see the museum's very location as a cultural affront.
"I absolutely welcome the discussion," she tells Jian, noting that the public will soon be able to judge for themselves.
"We'll know [if concerns are overstated] when people come into the museum, finally, and see what's there and how the museum's laid out."
