When Marvel Comics announced plans to reinvent Ms. Marvel as a Muslim teen, the news went viral -- and not just among comic book fans. The reboot was covered everywhere from The New York Times to The Colbert Report.

Kamala Khan -- the new Ms. Marvel -- is a 16-year-old Pakistani-American from New Jersey with shapeshifting powers. That's a big change from the previous version of the character -- a busty, muscular blonde.

Jian speaks to script writer G. Willow Wilson about the tremendous reaction to Kamala, the complexities of her plot line, and mainstream comics' push to diversify their superhero roster.

"Because there are so few characters like this one, everybody wants to see their own particular point of view represented in that character," she said. "And of course, if you were to take on all of those pressures, what you would end up with is a cardboard cutout instead of a fully fleshed-out character."
