Paul Gross on the boredom and blinding panic of war

Following Passchendaele, Paul Gross said he was done with war stories — but the true story behind Hyena Road proved irresistible.

Following his lauded World War I epic PasschendaelePaul Gross said he was done with war stories — but the filmmaker's latest project reveals a change of heart.

Gross joins Shad to discuss Hyena Road, his new film about Canadian troops struggling to build a road in Afghanistan, and why he felt compelled to take on another "ferociously complicated" conflict.

The actor and director says he's especially interested in the "intimate costs" of war — that is, what happens to the people we send to battle, and what they bring home.

"We've asked them to do an awful thing, and we shouldn't ever abandon them," he says.
