Soulpepper artistic director Weyni Mengesha on her vision for the theatre company's next chapter

Last January, four actors went public with allegations that rocked the theatre community in Canada. They sued Toronto's Soulpepper Theatre Company and its founding artistic director, Albert Schultz, over allegations of sexual harassment, abuse and unwanted sexual touching.

Their statements of claim called Schultz "a serial sexual predator." Schultz denied the allegations and resigned. The lawsuits brought against him and the theatre company were settled out of court.

The story ignited a larger conversation about sexual harassment in the world of theatre, against the backdrop of the #MeToo and #TimesUp movements. Now, Soulpepper is trying to move forward and learn from its past with a new artistic director, Weyni Mengesha.

She joins Tom Power live in the q studio to talk about the theatre company's next chapter. The company's first-ever original musical, Rose, premieres tonight and is on stage until Feb. 24, 2019.
