Tragedy Girls is not your typical slasher flick

Slasher films admittedly aren't for everyone. But, despite that, most people can name the big ones: Scream, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Halloween. These classics also all play with similar themes. Vendetta-seeking killers, scared teens running up the stairs instead of out the door, the scream queens and the final girls — these things are a skeleton for a lot of horror movies, and have been for a long time.

But when director Tyler MacIntyre was handed a script that played into these themes, he knew he wanted to do something different — something modern. Tragedy Girls is a horror comedy that follows two teenage girls who kidnap a serial killer in hopes of forcing him to be their mentor. The deranged duo is played by Brianna Hildebrand, whom you might recognize from Deadpool, and Alexandra Shipp who played Storm in the latest X-Men movie. The two are known as the Tragedy Girls. They embark on a murder spree that sends their small town into a panic, becomes national news and turns them into viral true crime reporters as they report on crimes they're committing.

MacIntyre joins Tom Power on today's show to discuss his fresh take on the classic slasher flick.

Tragedy Girls is in select theatres now. Watch the trailer below:
