Growing up in Vancouver in the 1980s, filmmaker Mina Shum hadn't quite figured out where she belonged.

She was a young Chinese-Canadian woman obsessed with the British punk rock scene. At the time, she didn't think there were many others like her. But when Shum started exploring the Hastings-Sunrise neighbourhood, she started finding her place. It was home to a mostly working-class and immigrant community and the relationship she had with it would go on to inspire several of her films.

Her 1994 hit Double Happiness — starring a young Sandra Oh — was filmed in Vancouver and so was her 2017 film Meditation Park, which opens the Vancouver International Film Festival tonight.

Shum dropped by our studio to bring you this musical block party from Hastings-Sunrise, in East Vancouver.
