How finding space to create helped Emily King find her sound

As a proud New Yorker, R&B singer Emily King spent the first 30 years of her life living in the Lower East Side of Manhattan on the same block. She even called her 2007 debut album East Side Story, which earned her a Grammy-nomination. 

But a lot has changed about King since then. She's got a different look, a different sound and a new home. In 2017, she decided to leave New York City and move a couple hours north to the Catskill Mountains. It was there that she began writing and recording her latest album Scenery, a blend of '80s pop, soul and roots music.

King recently paid a visit to the q music studio to perform some songs from the record and chat with Tom Power about why she felt she had to get out of the city both for her music and for her sanity.
