Norman Lear met with many writers for the reboot of his '70s sitcom, One Day at a Time, but after his meeting with Gloria Calderón Kellett (How I Met Your Mother, iZombie), he knew he had met the perfect candidate for this project.

"At the end of the meeting, he said 'You're my girl, let's do this,'" Kellett recalls.

The new One Day at a Time is a bit different from its originator and its main difference is why Kellett plays an integral part in the Netflix show: it follows a Latino family.

"Every show I've worked on, there are things that I've pitched that are personal," Kellett says, noting that all the writers on this show are bringing their experiences to the table. "This is so personal. The main character, I feel, is like an extension of me — there's a lot of us on the screen."

One Day at a Time is available now on Netflix.
