Max Greenfield knows what it's like to struggle — he almost walked away from acting before getting his big break starring in the sitcom New Girl.

Greenfield was nominated for a best supporting actor Emmy in 2012 for his role as Schmidt on that show, which is about to start its seventh and final season.

Before that season airs, Greenfield is set to star in The Glass Castle, a film adaptation of the best-selling memoir by Jeannette Walls. He appears alongside Brie Larson, Woody Harrelson, and Naomi Watts.

On q, Greenfield talks about his early struggles and reflects on saying goodbye to New Girl's obnoxious Schmidt.
