Failing Grades on Failing Species
A new study suggests Canada's policies to help species at risk are not working.
Canada's federal apparatus for protecting plant and animal species from extinction is not getting the job done, according to new research by a team including Dr. Brett Favaro, a Liber Ero post-doctoral Fellow, and research scientist in the Fisheries and Marine Institute of Memorial University of Newfoundland. Dr. Favaro and his colleagues at the University of Victoria, surveyed species that had been identified for protection over the past 30 years and more, and found that 86% of them had either not improved or had declined, since their status had been recognized. They further found that in more than half the cases, the government had not taken even the first legally mandated steps for conservation of species at risk.
