Never mind the robots, what about us?

The new movie "Ex Machina" raises the question of whether Ava, a highly sophisticated robot, can have consciousness, or whether it appears self-aware simply by spouting what it has been programmed to say. It had us wondering how we humans come to have consciousness.

Professor Evan Thompson, combines philosophy of mind, cognitive science, and Buddhist and Yogic thought to explore this question. We pick his brain.
