Connected for life

Do we need apps to make friends?
Is the same tech we use to find friends contributing to social isolation? (Pixabay/CC0)

This story first aired in March, 2016.

Is there is someone in the world looking for you while you're looking for them? There could be. Candy Baca and Adil Ansari have created Rendezwho, a new app that matches you with a random person who may be anywhere in the world.

(Rendezwho)

You only have a vague sense of where the other person is located, and you don't have an option to meet in-person until you end up relatively close geographically. In the meantime, the two of you can exchange GIFs or music playlists to get to know each other better.

Rendezwho is just one example of a much bigger trend: services that promise to connect you with other people, for friendship.

We discuss why we need technology to address the problems of isolation caused, in part, by excessive technology use.
