'Shut Up! I'm Thinking': Three CBC logophiles spar in our war of words

No matter how many books we read, crossword puzzles we complete or Scrabble games we play, there are thousands of words in the dictionary that are so obscure, we have no idea what they mean. They are at the heart of our year-end game, "Shut Up! I'm Thinking." Michael Enright announces a word that our panelists don't know and they write creative, credible-sounding definitions.

Our contenders this year have two things in common. They are all former foreign correspondents for CBC News and they have all been guest hosts on The Sunday Edition.

Nahlah Ayed spent nearly a decade covering the Middle East from several cities, including Baghdad, Beirut, Cairo and Jerusalem. Then she worked from the CBC's London bureau for seven years, covering world events such as Russia's annexation of Crimea, Europe's refugee crisis and Brexit. She is the author of a memoir called A Thousand Farewells. Since September, she has been host of the CBC Radio program Ideas.

Laura Lynch has reported for CBC News from Ottawa and many places around the world including Washington, London, the Middle East, Pakistan, Zimbabwe and Saudi Arabia. She has guest-hosted several national CBC Radio programs, most recently several months as anchor of The Current. 

And Peter Armstrong has been a sports reporter, a Parliamentary reporter and was our foreign correspondent in the Middle East for four years. He is now the senior business correspondent for CBC News.
