The Sunday Magazine for April 6, 2025

This week on The Sunday Magazine with Piya Chattopadhyay:
The global and domestic impacts of Trump's expanded trade war
The fallout continues after U.S. President Donald Trump expanded his trade war on the world stage this past week. Chattopadhyay surveys the global ripple effects, impacts on Canada, and how federal party leaders are responding on the campaign trail with The New York Times global economy reporter Peter S. Goodman, economist Armine Yalnizyan and Toronto Star Ottawa bureau chief and senior reporter Tonda MacCharles.

What our dogs can teach us about living a good life
There's so much to worry about in the world right now... but if you have a dog in your life, you know that our canine companions couldn't care less. Philosopher Mark Rowlands says there's a lesson to be learned there for us humans. In his new book, The Word of Dog, he delves into some big philosophical questions, from ethics to existentialism. Rowlands tells Chattopadhyay that, while he finds thinkers like Plato and Sartre have had some good ideas, he thinks there are incredibly valuable insights about how to live a good life waiting for us at our feet – in the lives of dogs.

Where is the resistance to Trump 2.0?
Donald Trump's first term in the White House saw mass protests on the streets and strong efforts to curb him in Congress. So where's the resistance now, as the U.S. president makes his expansive second term moves? Chattopadhyay speaks with journalist and essayist Ross Barkan and Mark Joseph Stern, a senior writer covering courts and the law for Slate, about the state of civic and political opposition to Trump, and how the judiciary is factoring in as a check on the president's power.
