This week on The Sunday Magazine with Piya Chattopadhyay:

Protest, politics, policing, and the pandemic

With a state of emergency declared in Canada's largest province, and protests at key border crossings, cities and even schools, Chattopadhyay speaks with federal Public Safety Minister Marco Mendicino about how the government plans to bring the situation under control and address the divisions and frustrations that brought us to this moment. Then, four astute political observers share their perspectives on the forces driving the protests, the government response, and what it all means for Canadians: Ottawa-based columnists Susan Delacourt of the Toronto Star and Erica Ifill of The Hill Times, Real Talk podcast host Ryan Jespersen in Edmonton, and CNN reporter Daniel Dale in Washington, D.C.

Jane Goodall appeals for hope in trying times

For decades, renowned primatologist Jane Goodall has traveled the world working to restore the balance between humans and the natural world. The pandemic has halted her travels, but not the work. Goodall speaks with Chattopadhyay from her childhood home in Bournemouth, England about her latest book The Book of Hope: A Survival Guide for Trying Times, her life sandwiched between the Second World War and the climate crisis, and why she doesn't fear her own death.

An actor's journey to feeling good naked at any age

After working for years as an actor in New York and Los Angeles, David Pevsner finally confronted the shame and self-loathing he felt about his body and desires. In his new book Damn Shame: A Memoir of Desire, Defiance and Show Tunes, he details his struggle for self-acceptance and reveals how a foray into the world of mature male escorting helped him accept his body and desires. The pro-aging "sexual activist" joins Chattopadhyay to share his journey from a "skinny, ugly, Jewish kid" growing up in the suburbs of Chicago, to performing on Broadway, to eventually enjoying his naked body so much he now shares it with the world – both through his book and online.
