As technology companies grab the headlines on the development of new cars, General Motors Canada has unveiled its own strategies to harness and affect technological change.

GM Canada is pushing towards innovation in an industry which is seeing a big shakeup with the rise of electric cars, self-driving vehicles and ride sharing.

A fully-electric vehicle, the Chevrolet Bolt, is due out on the market later this year — a symbol of change in the direction for GM.

On June 10, GM announced they will be hiring over the next few years — bringing in up to 1,000 new jobs in engineering, research and development. But manufacturing jobs were left out of the spotlight.

Steve Carlisle, president and managing director of GM Canada, is tasked with ensuring the automaker's place in this changing landscape. He joined The Current's host, Anna Maria Tremonti, to speak to how GM plans to stay innovative in the industry and how GM sees the car changing — moving beyond individually owned cars.
