FIFA scandals raise questions about Qatar World Cup bid
With new allegations of bribery and corruption and an ongoing investigation into Qatar's winning bid, we're asking whether FIFA should revisit the decision to give Qatar the cup in 2022.
This week, it came to light that the Russian and Qatari bids have been the subject of an FBI investigation, according to a U.S. law enforcement official speaking to Reuters on condition of anonymity. Russia and Qatar have denied any wrongdoing. And there have been no charges in either case. But calls are growing louder to re-open the bidding process, in particular for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
To find out more, we hear from three soccer-world watchers.
- Heidi Blake is the investigations editor for BuzzFeed UK and co-author of "The Ugly Game: The Qatari Plot to Buy the World Cup"
- Mike DeCourcy is a writer with GOAL.com and Sporting News
- Stephen Russell is the coordinator of Playfair Qatar
Do you think Qatar should keep the 2022 World Cup? Or should the bidding process be re-opened?
