Save Canada Post with parcel post delivery, says Ian Lee
This past summer, anger at the Conservative government's plan to withdraw door-to-door mail delivery was met with protests across the country.
This week, Canada Post announced its decision to "temporarily suspend" the program to move from door-to-door delivery to community mailboxes...which was also a Liberal election promise. That development was met with cheers and some fears.
"There was never any real economic justification for these cuts. Canada Post is a profitable crown corporation. It continues to make profit, it made $194 million last year. Now they should be undoing [cuts] because they never should have happened to begin with."- Mike Palacek, National President of the Canadian Union of Postal Workers
But others worry restoring full postal delivery is exactly the wrong thing to do.
Ian Lee teaches Strategic Management at Carleton University's Sprott School of Business. Earlier this year, he penned of a study on Canada Post called "Is The Cheque Still In The Mail?" where he argued it would be folly to continue door-to-door mail delivery.
