What is Mimi O'Bonsawin reading?

Mimi O'Bonsawin, a Toronto-based singer-songwriter originally from Sudbury, Ontario, recommends reading The Inconvenient Indian by Thomas King. Here's why:

"This book is incredible. It's about what it means to be native or aboriginal in Canada. There are certain things about this book that really stuck out. He says things about the dead Indian, the live Indian, the legal Indian — things I've never thought about before. Those are perspectives that I found were really interesting because when he speaks about the dead Indian, he talks about the stereotypical Indian, and when he talks about the live Indian, that's people who are alive today and feel invisible because they're not 'authentic.' This book should be taught in all schools. I think it's interesting how he talks about history and doesn't necessarily have all the facts, but exposes all these sad truths and absurdities. It did handle very heavy subjects, but it does very positive things because it gives people hope. It gives people knowledge. These are things that it gave me."
