Why The Weather Station's Tamara Lindeman loved Conversations with Friends by Sally Rooney
Tamara Lindeman is a singer-songwriter who fronts The Weather Station, a folk music project out of Toronto. The Weather Station released their fourth album, which was self-titled, in 2017.
Lindeman just finished reading Conversations with Friends by Sally Rooney. This interview originally aired on Jan. 22, 2018.
"It's about a young woman, Frances, who's in college. She doesn't know what or who she is, but — of course — she thinks she does. When you're a young woman, everyone is putting things on you and projecting things onto you. Frances is constantly falling back on her intellect as a shield or to try to explain away things that are happening.
"I identified with the way Frances doesn't understand that she has power. She doesn't understand that she's a person that can affect other people in the world. In this weird way, she just doesn't think she exists. I think the complexity of your experience has to do with trying to figure out what you are. It's an interesting type of young womanhood story that is rarely shown in books."
