ABOUT THE SHOW
White Coat, Black Art is an original and provocative show demystifying the world of medicine. Host Dr. Brian Goldman reveals the culture of medicine from the point of view of those who work on the other side of the gurney, and patients share their stories of navigating the health-care system to show you how and why things work (and often don't). All with an unprecedented level of honesty and insight.
ABOUT THE HOST
Host Dr. Brian Goldman is a veteran ER physician and one of Canada's most trusted medical broadcasters. He has worked as a medical reporter for CBC Television's The Health Show as well as The National, and for CBC Radio One as the "House Doctor." Brian has a proven knack for making sense of medical bafflegab and has won many awards for his efforts. On White Coat, Black Art, he takes listeners past medical bluff and bluster and shows what really goes on in healthcare, from all sides of the gurney. On The Dose podcast, he brings you the best science from top experts in plain language. Brian is also the author of The Night Shift, The Secret Language of Doctors, The Power of Kindness, and The Power of Teamwork.
ABOUT THE PRODUCERS
Senior Producer Colleen Ross loves telling stories that give listeners the chance to connect and learn from others. She helmed CBC's Health and Science units in the depths of the COVID-19 pandemic and before that, covered national and global news. Her health stories have ranged from the nursing crisis, home care and MAiD to sports gambling addiction and the menopause movement. She created the acclaimed radio programs Babel, Saving Strangers and The Pronoun Shift, and her journalism has garnered New York Festivals Radio Awards. Beyond the CBC, she worked with Cuso International's maternal and child health program in Tanzania and Ethiopia, and with Journalists for Human Rights in Ghana.
To borrow from host Dr. Brian Goldman, producer Jennifer Warren loves making radio that "connects with the head and the heart." Prior to joining White Coat, Black Art, Jennifer was the senior producer of CBC Radio's original documentary show The Doc Project from 2017 to 2022, which won awards with the Canadian Association of Journalists, New York Festivals, Mental Health Commission of Canada, Gabriels and Gracies under her leadership. As a member of the Q with Tom Power and CBC Books teams, she produced interviews with everyone from Ann-Marie MacDonald to Sylvester Stallone. Jennifer is also a reluctant hockey mom and a card-carrying member of the Nipissing Rock and Mineral Club.
Associate producer Stephanie Dubois is a storyteller who also understands what it's like to depend on health care regularly, as someone with Crohn's Disease. It's why she's passionate about working with Canadians to help them share their experiences. She prides herself on thinking of engaging and innovative ways to tell stories, which has led her to win several awards as an individual and as a team, including the R. James Travers Foreign Corresponding Fellowship to report on Filipino nurse recruitment, and a New York Festivals Radio award for a story about an overdose prevention and response team at the Edmonton library. She's worked for both Edmonton and national teams at CBC to tell stories about healthcare challenges, the people keeping hospitals running, and the individuals working to improve the healthcare system.
