Could Conor McGregor be done with mixed martial arts?

In a cryptic tweet on Tuesday, McGregor appeared to announce his retirement.

McGregor holds the UFC featherweight championship belt and was scheduled for a rematch with Nate Diaz after tapping out against him at UFC 196. The rematch was scheduled for UFC 200 on July 9 in Las Vegas, but the UFC has pulled him from the fight, president Dana White said.

"We pulled Conor McGregor from UFC 200 and we're working on other fights right now," White told ESPN. "Conor did not want to come to Las Vegas and film the commercial and be a part of the marketing. He's in Iceland training.

"Is Conor retiring? Only he can answer that question. I don't know."

Speculation over the validity and implications of his tweet exploded on Twitter. McGregor recently attended a fight in Dublin where Joao Carvalho sustained fatal injuries. Carvalho died on April 12.

McGregor's coach John Kavanagh tweeted in response to his prized fighter's announcement, adding to the rumour mill.

As well, Ariel Helwani, a MMA reporter with SB Nation's MMA Fighting, may have insight into the situation.
