Canada's Cone withdraws from team jumping

Canada's Mac Cone will not compete in the team show-jumping final on Monday because his horse is injured, CBCSports.ca has learned.

The King City, Ont., rider's horse, Ole, sustained a minor injury during Sunday's team jumping event, which means the Canadian team will not be able to drop its lowest score on the final day of show jumping.

Tied for fourth place and within reach of a medal going into Monday's final, Canada will compete with just three members instead of their original four. Three-member teams are allowed, as only the best three scores from each team contribute to the total.

Canada will be represented by Ian Millar on In Style, Eric Lamaze on Hickstead and Jill Henselwood on Special Ed.

"It sure does put you at a disadvantage," Millar said in a release. "But it is not uncommon in this sport to compete with three members. We've lost a strong one, but one of our closest opponents are in the same position."

Millar was referring to the British, with whom Canada is tied. Great Britain was reduced to three on Sunday when their veteran, John Whitaker's horse, Peppermill, was not feeling well. Peppermill has recovered as of Monday and they are appealing, asking for an opportunity to use four riders.
