Eighteen athletes failed doping tests at the Toronto Pan Am Games, but no Canadians were among those caught, Radio-Canada reported Wednesday.

The 18 cases, which reportedly include medallists, represent an increase from the 14 athletes who failed tests at the 2011 Pan Am Games in Guadalajara, Mexico.

At the end of this year's event, it was initially reported that eight athletes had tested positive.

According to the new Radio-Canada report, the athletes caught for steroids, human growth hormone, EPO and other new molecules reside in Mexico, Nicaragua, Dominican Republic, Colombia, Puerto Rico and Peru, among other countries.

Mauricio Fiol, a Peruvian swimmer who won a silver medal in the men's 200-metre butterfly, reportedly tested positive, as did teammate Gladys Tejeda, who won gold in the women's marathon.

Should Fiol be stripped of his medal, Canadians Zack Chetrat and Alec Page would be awarded silver and bronze, respectively.

If Tejeda is knocked from the podium, Canada's Rachel Hannah would be awarded bronze.

Canada's 217 medals shattered the national record for a Pan Am Games, eclipsing the previous mark of 196 set at the 1999 event in Winnipeg.

The report of the failed doping tests comes as Toronto is considering submitting a bid to bring the 2024 Summer Olympics to the city.
