Alomar inducted into Canadian baseball hall
One of the players who helped bring Toronto back-to-back World Series championships has been honoured for his contribution to baseball in Canada.
Roberto Alomar, the former Blue Jays second baseman who dazzled fans with his glove and his bat, was inducted into the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame on Saturday in St. Marys, Ont.
Alomar, acquired by Toronto from the San Diego Padres in 1990, was a pivotal part of the team that won the World Series in 1992 and 1993.
The native of Puerto Rico — who also spent time in the majors with the Baltimore Orioles, Cleveland Indians, Arizona Diamondbacks, Chicago White Sox and New York Mets — hit 210 homers with a .300 average over a 17-year career.
Former Blue Jays reliever Paul Quantrill, late Minnesota Twins owner Calvin Griffith and late statistician Allan Roth were also inducted Saturday.
Quantrill, a native of Port Hope, Ont., pitched 14 seasons in the majors, compiling a 68-78 record to go along with a 3.83 earned-run average.
Griffith, of Montreal, was responsible for moving the then-Washington Senators to Minnesota in 1961. He died in 1999.
Roth, who died in 1992 and was also from Montreal, was baseball's first full-time statistician.
