Blue Jays interview Sandy Alomar Jr.

Once he retired as a player, Indians coach Sandy Alomar set his sights on becoming a big league manager. He's a little closer to that goal.

Alomar, a six-time All-Star catcher with Cleveland, has interviewed for the manger's job in Toronto, a person familiar with the situation told The Associated Press on Tuesday. Alomar met Monday in Toronto with Blue Jays officials, according to the person, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the interview had not been made public by the teams.

It was Alomar's third interview with the Blue Jays, with the first two taking place over the phone. Alomar, who has never managed at any level, is believed to be a finalist for the opening.

The Blue Jays have talked to several candidates to replace Cito Gaston, who retired at the end of the season after his second stint with the Blue Jays.

Alomar coached first base for manager Manny Acta in Cleveland last season. Before joining the Indians' staff, Alomar spent two seasons as a minor league catching instructor for the New York Mets. The 44-year-old retired after the 2007 season.
