The Toronto Blue Jays claimed rookie pitcher Dirk Hayhurst off waivers from the San Diego Padres on Monday.

The Toronto Blue Jays claimed rookie pitcher Dirk Hayhurst off waivers from the San Diego Padres on Monday.

Hayhurst, 27, posted an 0-2 record with a 9.72 earned-run average in 10 appearances with the Padres, including three starts.

The right-hander yielded 18 runs on 27 hits and 10 walks with 14 strikeouts in 16 2/3 innings pitched. 

Hayhurst, from Canton, Ohio, spent the bulk of the season with Portland of the triple-A Pacific Coast League.

He went 2-3 with a 3.75 ERA and two saves in 46 games with the Beavers, striking out 98 batters in 84 innings.
