Blue Jays manager John Gibbons and third baseman Josh Donaldson got into an argument during the Blue Jays 7-4 win over the New York Yankees on Wednesday.

The incident occurred in the third inning, after Donaldson struck out for a second time against Yankees' left-hander CC Sabathia.

As the AL MVP returned to the dugout he threw his bat, prompting the exchange with Gibbons.

As things got heated, both Troy Tulowitzki and Josh Thole stepped in to restrain Donaldson.

Cooler heads had seemingly prevailed by the fifth inning after Russel Martin's single allowed Donaldson to score. This time, as the player walked into the dugout he and Gibbons exchanged a soft, low-five.

After the game, Donaldson joked that Gibbons had simply wanted a whiff of his cologne. "Gibby asked me what kind of cologne I was wearing. I said, `It's a new cologne called Tom Ford. I just got it.' He was like, `Really?' So he kind of got pretty close to me and I guess got a good whiff of it. I was like, `Hey man, back up. So, I'll give you some after the game."'

While Gibbons, smiling, said "I told him after the first at-bat, get a new bat, that one ain't working. He [Donaldson] took the same one up the second time. That didn't work. He chose to break it. So I went down and told him, you should have listened to me. That was basically it."

A bigger concern for the Jays is the thumb injury that forced Donaldson to leave the game in the sixth inning.

No word has yet been given as to whether Donaldson will be able to play when the Jays next take the field on Friday in Cleveland.
