Wood poised to pitch for Indians: report
Free-agent closer Kerry Wood reportedly is poised to sign with the Cleveland Indians.
Wood, 31, is putting the final touches on a two-year contract with Cleveland, according to sources requesting anonymity because the deal isn't yet finalized.
The hard-throwing right-hander moved from the starting rotation into the role of closer last season, posting a 5-4 mark with a 3.26 earned-run average and 34 saves in 65 relief appearances for the Chicago Cubs.
He struck out 84 batters and walked just 18 in 66 1/3 innings pitched.
Wood is 77-61 lifetime with 3.64 ERA, 34 saves, 11 complete games and five shutouts in 276 major-league appearances, including 178 starts.
But the two-time all-star is prone to injury, having landed on the disabled list no less than a dozen times in 10 seasons with the Cubs.
Wood, named National League rookie of the year in 1998, filed for free agency on Oct. 31.
