Canadian Sutton-Brown taken 18th in WNBA draft
Tammy Sutton-Brown of Markham, Ont., and Kelly Schumacher, who played college basketball in Quebec, were selected in the WNBA draft Friday.
Schumacher was chosen 14th overall by the Indiana Fever while Sutton-Brown was taken 18th overall by the Charlotte Sting.
Sutton-Brown, 23, was a member of the Canadian women's team that finished 10th at the Olympic Games in Sydney last September.
The six-foot-four senior centre led Rutgers in scoring with 11.8 points per game, field-goal percentage (.568) and blocks with 1.3 per game.
Schumacher, a fourth-year, six-foot-five centre who lists her home-towns as both Cincinnati and Quyon, Que., led the University of Connecticut in blocks with 65 and had a career-high nine in the NCAA championship game against Tennessee.
The 23-year-old played basketball for John Abbott College in Quebec from 1995 to 1997. She led John Abbott to two Canadian College Athletic Association titles and was named the CCAA's top player in 1997.
Cal Bouchard of Aurora, Ont., was the first Canadian player to be drafted by the WNBA last year when she was chosen in the fourth round by the Detroit Shock. She chose not to play for the team in 2000 in order to train with the Canadian squad for the Olympic Games.
Kelly Boucher of Calgary was the first Canadian to play in the WNBA when she suited up for the Charlotte Sting in 1998.
