Shooting Stars best defending champion Stingers for 2nd consecutive victory

The Scarborough Shooting Stars pulled off their most impressive win of the year by defeating the defending champion Edmonton Stingers 78-69 on Sunday in Edmonton.

Despite missing big man Kyle Alexander, the Shooting Stars showed impressive resolve and a great improvement on the defensive end only allowing one Stinger to score in double figures.

On what was a cold night for star Jalen Harris, players such as Kam Chatman, who recorded 19 points and grabbed eight rebounds, stepped up when needed most.

"It felt great [to defeat Edmonton]. It was ugly, it was slow, but we got some tough guys in our locker room. We were able to push it out and get the win," Chatman said post-game.

"We got a deep team, we need everybody. Just staying aggressive and staying focused and doing what I need to do to win the game."

Harris scored a game-high 21 on 6-of-20 shooting, while Sarunas Vasiliauskas pitched in with 14 points for the Shooting Stars (3-3). Xavier Rathan-Mayes scored seven points off the bench in his return to the lineup.

Aher Uguak led Edmonton (4-2) with 14 points off the bench, as star Jordan Baker was held to a mere two points on the night.

In what was a very tightly-contested game all the way through, Scarborough led 58-57 heading into the fourth quarter.

Going down 64-61 at the 7:20 mark, Scarborough went on a 8-0 run going into the Elam Ending.

With Edmonton closing the gap to as little as two, the Shooting Stars again had an answer, closing the game on a 9-2 run with Harris hitting the game-sealing three-pointer.

Scarborough will next look to extend its win streak to three when they play the Saskatchewan Rattlers on Wednesday at 8:30 p.m. ET. Meanwhile, the Stingers will look to bounce back against the Fraser Valley Bandits on Wednesday at 9 p.m. ET.

Rattlers best River Lions behind impressive comeback

The Saskatchewan Rattlers snapped their two-game losing streak behind a spectacular performance in the Elam Ending in a 86-81 win over the Niagara River Lions on Sunday in St. Catharines, Ont.

After going down by nine early in the Elam Ending, needing 16 points to win, Saskatchewan (3-3) closed the game on a 16-2 run, halting any chance of Niagara (4-3) of avenging its season-opening loss to the Rattlers.

Tony Carr led the way for Saskatchewan, scoring 25 points, with eight coming in the Elam Ending. 

Devonte Bandoo and Scottie Lindsey added 14 apiece for the Rattlers.

Niagara was led by Jaylen Babb-Harrison and Antonio Davis Jr., who both scored team-high's of 20 points.

The River Lions will next play the Montreal Alliance on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. ET.

Honey Badgers continue hot streak

Caleb Agada finished with 16 points and nine assists, while Jeremiah Tilmon added a team-high 17 as the Hamilton Honey Badgers took a 80-68 win over the winless Newfoundland Growlers on Sunday in St. John's, N.L.

Hamilton went down three points after the first quarter but quickly turned the tide, outscoring Newfoundland 26-11 in the frame to go up 12.

Newfoundland fell out of reach until the fourth quarter where they made a surge, cutting the deficit to as little as three. That was as close as the Growlers could get as the Honey Badgers flexed their muscle finishing the game on a 9-0 run.

The Honey Badgers (6-1) have now won five straight and continue to sit atop the CEBL standings.

Meanwhile, the Growlers (0-5) are still searching for their first win in franchise history.

The Growlers were led by Shaquille Keith's 21 points, six rebounds and five assists. Jahvon Blair and Brandon Sampson added 15 and 14 points apiece.

Both sides will next play each other on Thursday in Hamilton at 7 p.m. ET. The game will be streamed live on CBCSports.ca, the CBC Sports app and CBC Gem.
