Canadian Gough wins bronze in luge

Alex Gough won a bronze medal Sunday  in Germany to make Canada's first podium appearance at a women's World Cup luge event in six years.

Gough, of Calgary, finished third with a two-run time of one minute 55.411 seconds.

Olympic champion Tatjana Huefner sped down the course into a champagne shower to celebrate Germany's 100th straight women's World Cup luge victory.

Huefner finished first in 1:54.669. She was just ahead of teammate Natalie Geisenberger, who won silver in 1:55.283.

Gough has come close to the podium before. She finished fourth at last year's world championship in Lake Placid. It was Canada's best-ever result at the women's event.

Calgary's Regan Lauscher was the last Canadian to reach the podium at a women's World Cup luge event. She won a silver medal at Lake Placid in 2004.
