Commonwealth Games: Top Canadian performances
Canada finished 3rd in the medal standings
Canada had a strong showing at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, earning a third-place finish with 32 gold medals and 82 total.
There were plenty of standout performances from Canadian athletes during the Games. Here are some of our favourites.
Patricia Bezzoubenko – Rhythmic gymnastics
Nobody won more gold medals at the Commonwealth Games than Bezzoubenko. She took five of a possible six gold medals in the discipline, earning wins in the all-around, hoop, ball, clubs, and team event, and added a bronze in the ribbon. She was one medal shy of matching the Commonwealth record of six.
Sultana Frizell – Hammer throw
Frizell defended her title in dominant fashion, setting than breaking her Commonwealth record three times during the event. The 29-year-old was also awarded the honour of carrying Canada’s flag into Hampden Park during the closing ceremony.
Ryan Cochrane – Swimming
Cochrane repeated his double-gold performance in Dehli 2010, winning the men’s 400-metre and 1,500-metre freestyle events.
Michelle Li – Badminton
Li made Canadian history on the final day of competition, earning Canada’s first-ever gold medal at the Commonwealth Games in the women’s singles event.
Meaghan Benfeito – Diving
She won two golds in Glasgow, taking the title in the women’s 10-metre platform event and the 10-metre synchro competition along with teammate Roseline Filion.
Scott Morgan – Gymnastics
The gymnast won four medals total. He stood atop the podium in both the rings and men’s vault, won silver in the floor event, and bronze in the team competition.
