While Sidney Crosby, Brad Marchand and Carey Price put on show in leading Canada to victory in the World Cup of Hockey in Toronto, training camps around the NHL opened and have been in full swing for a couple of weeks.

In case you missed them, here are some stories of interest with 10 days remaining before the 2016-17 regular season begins.

Gaudreau, Trouba continue holdouts

The Calgary Flames and Winnipeg Jets appear no closer to signing their prized restricted free agents Johnny Gaudreau and Jacob Trouba, respectively. The difference between the two situations is Gaudreau wants to stay in Calgary, while the 22-year-old Trouba has asked the Jets for a trade.

Gaudreau is coming off a 30-goal sophomore campaign with the Flames, but there has been little movement in negotiations.

"Hopefully, we can find some common ground soon and get him back here where he belongs," Calgary assistant general manager Craig Conroy told Flames TV on Sunday.

The Flames did receive good news over the weekend when centre Sean Monahan skated with his teammates for the first time since an off-season back injury.

Matthews plays it cool

Auston Matthews made his pre-season debut with the Toronto Maple Leafs on Sunday after a successful World Cup tournament with the 23-and-under North American team.

Matthews skated on a line with William Nylander and Zach Hyman. The 19-year-old Matthews remarked that he wasn't nervous, but considering he played pro in Switzerland last season and represented the United States at the world junior and world championship tournaments along with the World Cup, why would nerves get the better of him in an exhibition outing against the Canadiens?

Subban makes splash

Speaking of the Habs, former Montreal defenceman P.K. Subban made his debut with Nashville on Saturday. He scored a goal and set up another in the Predators' 4-3 win against the visiting Tampa Bay Lightning.

Canucks youngsters impress

Right wing Anton Rodin and defenceman Troy Stecher are two newcomers who have made an impression in Vancouver Canucks camp. The 25-year-old Rodin scored twice in weekend games. He was the Sweden Hockey League's MVP last season.

The 22-year-old Stecher, a local player from Richmond, B.C., was a free-agent signing out of the University of North Dakota last spring. He's only 5-foot-10, but is a strong skater and has looked good on the power play.

McDavid joins new linemates

Connor McDavid debuted on a line with new teammate Milan Lucic and Jordan Eberle over the weekend. McDavid set up Eberle for the game-winner in an exhibition game against the Los Angeles Kings on Sunday.

Boucher lays down law

In Ottawa, new Senators head coach Guy Boucher made headlines when he benched veteran forward Bobby Ryan and defenceman Cody Ceci for the entire first period of Ottawa's pre-season game against the Canadiens on Saturday. The two were being punished after they showed up late for a team meeting earlier in the day.

Habs put Plekanec with new guys

Veteran Montreal centre Tomas Plekanec returned to the Canadiens' camp from the World Cup to find his linemates are newcomers Alexander Radulov and Andrew Shaw.

Radulov has looked good so far, while Shaw was suspended for three games for a boarding incident in a game against the Washington Capitals last week.

Blues lose Schwartz

Meanwhile, the St. Louis Blues were counting on a healthy Jaden Schwartz to return to the form he displayed when he enjoyed back-to-back 25- and 28-goals seasons in 2013-14 and 2014-15. But he will miss the first month of the season with a left elbow injury after he collided with teammate Alex Steen in practice last Thursday.

Conacher gets another shot

After he was traded to the Ottawa Senators in the Ben Bishop deal three years ago, Cory Conacher made stops with the Buffalo Sabres and New York Islanders, had two stints in the AHL and spent last season in Switzerland.

But Conacher has reunited with his old coach Jon Cooper in Tampa Bay – the two won an AHL Calder Cup championship with the Norfolk Admirals in 2011-12 – and Cooper is confident there is a spot for Conacher in his bottom six this season.

Mr. Crosby goes to Washington

Finally, Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins will visit President Obama at the White House on Thursday to honour the Penguins brilliant Stanley Cup run last spring
