The Montreal Canadiens revealed the throwback jersey the team will wear when they face the Boston Bruins on New Years Day.

The Montreal Canadiens on Friday unveiled the jersey they'll wear for the upcoming NHL Winter Classic.

Montreal will play the Boston Bruins on New Year's Day at Gillette Stadium, home of the NFL's New England Patriots.

The Canadiens said in a news release that the new jersey "recalls multiple elements related to the Canadiens' rich history," including a chest stripe that is "a shade of blue inspired by the first-ever Canadiens jersey worn after their founding in 1909.

The colours of the familiar "CH" crest are inverted from the usual, with the "C" white and the "H" red in honour of the 1923-24 team that won the team's first Stanley Cup as part of the NHL.

There's also an image of a globe on the sleeve that recalls the "world champions" design worn the following season, which was the Bruins' first in the NHL.
