NHL moves: Lightning's Carle, Bruins' Seidenberg among buyouts
Oilers, Flames also among teams making moves
A person with direct knowledge of the moves tells The Associated Press that Tampa Bay Lightning defenceman Matt Carle and Boston Bruins defenceman Dennis Seidenberg are among the players on buyout waivers.
Their source spoke on the condition of anonymity on Thursday because the teams haven't yet announced their decisions.
Nashville Predators defenceman Barrett Jackman, Los Angeles Kings defenceman Matt Greene, Columbus Blue Jackets forward Jared Boll and Edmonton Oilers forward Lauri Korpikoski are the others,
The person also said Predators forward Eric Nystrom cleared buyout waivers.
The Calgary Flames announced Mason Raymond cleared waivers and will be bought out.
The Carle buyout saves the Lightning $3.67 million US in cap space for the next two seasons, while the Seidenberg buyout saves the Bruins $2.83 million next season.
The Carolina Hurricanes announced they have bought out the final year of veteran defenceman James Wisniewski's contract. The 32-year-old Wisniewski was to make $3 million this coming season. Instead, he will receive $2 million over the next two years and will become an unrestricted free agent Friday when the NHL's free agency period starts.
Bruins give Krug 4 more years
The Boston Bruins re-signed defenceman Torey Krug to a four-year contract worth an average annual value of $5.25 million.
Krug, 25, played in a career-high 81 games last season and recorded four goals. His 40 assists ranked ninth among NHL defencemen.
Sharks re-sign Hertl
The San Jose Sharks signed pending restricted free agent forward Tomas Hertl to a two-year contract.
The deal announced Thursday is worth a reported $6 million and keeps one of San Jose's top players in the fold as the team tries to build on last season's trip to the Stanley Cup Final.
The 22-year-old Hertl is coming off his best season as a pro, having recorded career highs with 21 goals and 25 assists in 81 games. He thrived when moved to the top line with Joe Thornton and Joe Pavelski in the middle of the season and was a big reason behind San Jose's postseason success.
Hertl had six goals and five assists in 20 playoff games before being sidelined by a knee injury in Game 2 of the final.
"I won't even put a limit on him," general manager Doug Wilson said. "He just gets better and better. He's a big, strong guy. ... When we drafted him, we expected him to be a dominant player and so does he. He has high expectations for himself. He loves to play the game. You can see that smile on his face. It's contagious."
Capitals re-sign Wilson
The Washington Capitals have signed right winger Tom Wilson to a $4 million, two-year contract.
Wilson will count $2 million against the salary cap over the length of the deal. He will earn $1.75 million next season and $2.25 million in 2017-18. The 22-year-old had seven goals, 16 assists and 163 penalty minutes in 82 games last season for the Capitals, who drafted him 16th overall in 2012. In 231 NHL games, the Toronto native has 14 goals, 36 assists and 486 penalty minutes.
