Daniel Alfredsson's days with the Ottawa Senators aren't over yet.

The team announced on Monday that they've agreed to a one-year extension with the former captain to remain as the senior advisor of hockey operations.

In a statement issued Monday, owner Eugene Melnyk said he was pleased that the two sides could reach an agreement.

"It is great to have Daniel back as part of the Senators' hockey department," Melnyk said. "It is wonderful to know that Daniel and his family are returning to Ottawa ... I look forward to the contributions Daniel will continue to make with our hockey club and in the community."

Alfredsson's role will be focused at the National Hockey League level while acting as an advisor to the hockey operations department.

"When I started this last year, I was not really sure what to expect," Alfredsson said. "This job has turned out to be exactly what I'm looking for – the opportunity to be flexible and see so many of the different requirements of working in an NHL front office."

Alfredsson is the club's all-time leader in a number of categories including goals, assists and points. He also leads all Senators in power-play goals, short-handed goals, game-winning goals, shots and hat-tricks.

The 43-year-old was the Senators' captain for 13 seasons. He recorded 1,108 points in 1,178 career games with Ottawa.
