Edmonton Oilers forward Evander Kane will miss three to four months after being cut on the left wrist by a skate blade.

The injury occurred during Edmonton's 3-2 win at Tampa Bay on Tuesday.

Kane got tangled with Lightning defenceman Philippe Myers just inside the Edmonton defensive zone and while on the ice was cut by Tampa Bay forward Pat Maroon's skate blade 3:27 into the second period.

Kane was transported to a hospital and underwent a procedure Tuesday night.

"You cringe when you see that," Lightning head coach Jon Cooper said. "It was tough to see. You know, hockey, you battle against each other. It's a war [but] we're still a family."

Edmonton forward Evander Kane immediately skates off the ice for medical attention after having his wrist cut by the skate blade Tampa Bay forward Pat Maroon.

Kane grabbed the lacerated area with his right hand and rushed to the bench before heading for the locker room.

"It's scary, certainly scary," Oilers star forward Connor McDavid said. "I think you could feel the energy in the entire rink kind of just get sucked out."

The 31-year-old Kane, who signed a four-year contract worth $20.5 million US with the Oilers in the off-season, has five goals and eight assists over 13 games this season.

McDavid had a goal and an assist for the Oilers, extending his point streak to eight games (nine goals, 19 points) and has 14 goals in as many games this season.

Leon Draisait has a five-game goal streak, and a point in nine consecutive games (seven goals, 18 points) for the Oilers, who halted a three-game losing skid.

Cooper called McDavid and Draisaitl "human highlight films."

"Think about McDavid, we're in the best league in the world, with the fastest players in the world, and he sticks out like a sore thumb," Cooper said. "Draisaitl, he's just a horse. He's got the whole package."
