NHL: What's at stake for jam-packed final weekend
Canadian teams jockey for best lottery odds; Red Wings eyeing playoffs
The NHL regular season may be winding done, but it will go out with a bang this weekend with a full slate of games and plenty still at stake.
Every team will take to the ice on Saturday, followed by a pair of games on Sunday, with the most at stake being the final two playoff spots in the Eastern Conference. And while there is still lots of jockeying to be done for teams already in the playoffs, here are some other storylines to keep an eye on:
Three's a crowd
The Red Wings, Bruins, and Flyers are all eyeing playoff spots that are in short supply. When the music stops, one of these aspiring teams will be left out of the post-season party based on a variety of scenarios that read like a complicated computer algorithm.
Detroit has a chance to clinch a playoff berth for the 25th consecutive season.
Leafs, Oilers in battle for the basement
The Leafs will pay a visit to New Jersey, while the Oilers finish off their season on the road against the Canucks.
Toronto and Edmonton are facing a dilemma of sorts with both pride and the best draft lottery odds on the line.
Each club is guaranteed no higher than 29th in the standings and they are deadlocked at 69 points heading into their finales.
Holtby chasing record
Washington Capitals netminder Braden Holtby can put a rather emphatic stamp on his season with a win on Saturday.
Already considered a top candidate for the Vezina Trophy, Holtby has a chance to tie Martin Brodeur's record of 48 regular-season victories.
In addition to Holtby, Roberto Luongo and Bernie Parent are the only other goalies to notch 47 wins in the same season.
Holtby is not a lock to start in his team's final game on Sunday,
50 goals in reach
It would take three goals over his last two games, but that certainly isn't out of the realm of possibility for Washington's Alex Ovechkin, who currently leads the league with 47.
The Capitals winger has reached the mark in the previous two seasons, with 51 and 53 goals, respectively.
