Red Wings' Fischer released from hospital

Detroit Red Wings defenceman Jiri Fischer was released from hospital Wednesday and is at home resting comfortably.

A release from the NHL team said he's been placed on injured reserve.

The news is a remarkable turnaround from Monday evening, when the 25-year-old Czech collapsed on the Detroit bench and went into convulsions in the first period against the visiting Nashville Predators.

Red Wings medical staff came quickly to his aid while teammates assisted with a stretcher and ushered his fiancée across the ice to be by Fischer's side. Meanwhile, a hushed crowd at Joe Louis Arena stood by with bated breath.

The situation didn't look positive at first as team physician Dr. Tony Colucci wasn't able to detect a pulse on Fischer. An auto defibrillator was used.

After performing CPR, Colucci said he detected a good pulse and Fischer was taken out of the arena by ambulance to Detroit Receiving Hospital. The game was postponed.

Colucci said Fischer's heart might have stopped, but he didn't know for how long.

Fischer's blood pressure and heart rate were stable by the time he arrived at the hospital. The cause of Fischer's collapse is not yet known.

The Wings recalled defenceman Kyle Quincey for Wednesday night's game against Colorado.

The team said fans would have the opportunity at the game to sign large get-well cards for Fischer.
