Canadian women's artistic gymnastics Olympic team to be decided at Rio selection camp
2015 Pan Am star Ellie Black among 11 athletes competing for 5 spots
Five more athletes will officially join Canada's Rio 2016 team this week, while six others put their Olympic dreams on hold.
The Canadian women's artistic gymnastics team qualified their country for the Olympics during October's world championships, but it will be the national selection camp – beginning Monday in Gatineau, Que. – that will determine which female gymnasts head to Rio.
That means 11 teammates will go head-to-head on the balance beam, uneven bars, vault and floor exercise to secure the five available Olympic spots.
Scores determine Olympic dream
Selection depends not only on their performance at the camp -- out of the five athletes named to Rio, three will be selected based on an amalgamation of their scores at the trials and these previous events:
- 15 per cent of their score at the 2015 world championships
- 15 per cent of their score at 2016 Elite Canada
- 15 per cent of their scores at select international competitions between February and March
- 35 per cent of their score at the 2016 Canadian Championships
- 50 per cent of their score at Rio selection trials
The other two individuals will be chosen for the Olympic team based on a review from a group of five individuals who are various directors, coaches and judges connected to the women's artistic gymnastics team. Their choices will be based on a review of results in the past two years, and their abilities to contribute to the team.
Gymnastics Canada will announce the official artistic gymnastics Olympic roster on Thursday.
Below are the 11 women currently on the team who will compete this weekend:
- Isabela Onyshko – Brandon, Man.
- Ellie Black – Halifax
- Shallon Olsen – Surrey, B.C.
