Canada unveils 8-member gymnastics team for Rio Olympics

Canada on Thursday finalized its five-woman artistic gymnastics squad and three-member trampoline team that will compete at the Rio Olympics in August.

Shallon Olsen of Surrey, B.C. and Rose Woo of Brossard, Que., join Ellie Black, Brittany Rogers and Isabela Onyshko, who were named to the team Wednesday at the national selection camp in Gatineau, Que.

They qualified for the team based on the number of points they have accumulated from the 2015 World Championships, 2016 Elite Canada, 2016 Canadian Championships, select international competitions in February and March, and this week's camp.

The competition program of women's artistic gymnastics includes the vaulting table, uneven bars, beam and floor routine.

Also named were Rosie MacLennan, the 2012 Olympic gold medallist in trampoline, and returning Olympian Jason Burnett, who won silver at the 2008 Summer Games in Beijing, China. Scott Morgan, who won double gold at the 2014 Commonwealth Games, will make his Olympic debut in men's artistic gymnastics.

MacLennan, a 27-year-old Toronto native, secured an Olympic berth in March with her victory at the Canada Cup in Kamloops, B.C.

"I am incredibly excited to be heading to my third Olympic Games," said MacLennan in a statement released by Gymnastics Canada. "It's always an honour to represent Canada in a sport that I am truly passionate about and to join a team of such amazing athletes and people."

Burnett, also of Toronto, will compete in his third Summer Games after capturing one of eight qualification spots at the Aquece Test Event in Rio in April.

Morgan, 27, is Canada's lone men's artistic gymnast headed to Brazil after that team failed to finish among the top four of eight national squads at a Rio test event in April. He finished fourth in the vault at that competition after qualifying for the final at the 2015 Pan Am Games in Toronto.

"Six years ago, seeing the 2010 Olympians in my hometown of Vancouver sent shivers down my spine," he said. Now I can't wait to be part of the team I looked up to … showing the world Canada's best."

Reigning Pan Am champion

Black, the 20-year-old reigning Pan Am champion, finished first all-around in the opening day of competition at the national camp on Tuesday with a first-place result on her vault and her floor routine. She was third on the beam and uneven bars.

Rogers, 23, represented the University of Georgia at this year's NCAA championships and placed first in uneven bars. At the 2012 London Olymipcs, she helped Canada to a best-ever fifth-place finish in the team event.

The 18-year-old Onyshko finished 16th in the all-around at the 2015 world championships.

Woo, 16, was the junior national all-around champion in 2014.

The 15-year-old Olsen is the youngest member of the Canadian team and was the junior national all-around champion in 2013.

The women's team will hold a final Olympic preparation camp in Sarnia, Ont., the week before departing for Rio.

The artistic gymnastics competition will be contested at the Rio Olympic Arena from Aug. 6-16, while the women's and men's trampoline qualifiers and finals are scheduled for Aug. 12 and 13, respectively.
