Biles leads U.S. into gymnastics final, Canada falls short

American Simone Biles led the way through qualification in artistic gymnastics, as the United States finished the round atop the leaderboard with a team score of 185.238.

The 19-year-old, making her Olympic debut, finished with the day's highest individual score (62.366), slightly ahead of teammates Alexandra Raisman (60.607) and Gabby Douglas (60.131), who finished second and third, respectively.

Raisman and Biles will represent the United States in the all-around individual final, which allows a maximum two members per country to compete.

Biles was the only competitor to receive a score of 16 or higher, having done so with a nearly flawless performance in the vault, for which she was given an average score of 16.050.

China (175.279), Russia (174.620), Great Britain (174.064), Brazil (174.054), Germany (173.263), Japan (172.564), and Netherlands (171.929) round out the other seven countries to qualify for Tuesday's team final.

Canada fails to qualify for team final

The Canadians narrowly missed qualifying for the team final, a step back from four years ago when they finished in fifth.

The team came in ninth place with a score of 171.761.

Isabela Onyshko (57.232) and Ellie Black (56.965) were the top Canadians and will compete in the individual the all-around final.

Onyshko will also compete in the balance beam final after her score of 14.533 was enough to squeak into the final spot after Raisman and Douglas, the third and fourth best Americans in the event, were eliminated due to the two-competitor-per-country rule.

Shallon Olsen's 14.950 score in the vault was the sixth highest mark of the day. She'll compete for a medal in the event on Aug. 14 at 1:47 p.m. ET.

Brittany Rogers (14.783), nearly qualified for the vault final herself, finishing in ninth. She had a disappointing performance on the uneven bars, falling on her back en route to a 36th-place finish in the event.

Oldest ever gymnast qualifies for vault final

Uzbekistan's Oksana Chusovitina, who at 41 became the oldest gymnast to ever compete at the Olympics, qualified for the eight-woman vault final.

Her two vaults averaged a score of 14.999, which was good enough for fifth.

This is her seventh Games.
