How Canada's athletes fared Saturday in Rio

Canada continued to add its medal haul on Saturday with bronze medals being won in cycling and athletics. Here's how Canadian athletes performed throughout the Olympic Games on Saturday.

Canada continued to add to its haul Saturday with bronze medals being won in cycling and athletics.

Here's how Canadian athletes performed throughout the Olympic Games on Saturday.

Bronze-medal performances

Women's team pursuit — Canada (Allison Beveridge, Calgary; Jasmin Glaesser, Vancouver; Kirsti Lay, Montreal; and Georgia Simmerling, West Vancouver, B.C.), lost their first round race to Britain by 3.484 seconds; won the bronze medal in 4:14.627 — outpacing New Zealand by 3.832 seconds in the third-four final.

Women's heptathlon — Brianne Theisen-Eaton, Humboldt, Sask., posted the fourth-best mark in the long jump (6.48 metres); a top throw of 47.36 in the javelin; and her time of 2:09.50 in the 800 gave her a final total of 6,653 points to capture the bronze medal.

Athletics

Men's 100 — Andre De Grasse of Markham, Ont., earned a berth in Sunday's semifinal round with the third-fastest time in qualifying (10.04); Akeem Haynes, Calgary, was 26th overall (10.22), and Aaron Brown, Toronto, 31st (10.24) — neither advanced.

Men's 800 — Brandon McBride, Windsor, Ont., was 14th overall in the semifinal round (1:45.41) and did not qualify for the final.

Men's 10,000 — Mohammed Ahmed, St. Catharines, Ont., finished 32nd in 29:32.84.

Men's pole vault — Shawn Barber, Toronto, earned a berth in Monday's final round with a best-mark of 5.70 metres in qualifying.

Women's 400 — Carline Muir, Edmonton, will race in the second round after placing 16th overall in qualifying (51.57); Alicia Brown, Ottawa (52.77), and Kendra Clark, Edmonton (53.61), were 28th and 48th, respectively, and did not advance.

Women's 3,000 steeplechase — Genevieve Lalonde, Moncton, N.B., placed 14th in qualifying (9:30.54) to earn a berth in the final; Maria Bernard, Calgary, was 42nd (9:50.17); Erin Teschuk, Winnipeg, 46th (9:53.70) — neither advanced.

Badminton

Men's singles — Martin Giuffre, Calgary, improved to 1-1 in group stage play after defeating Pedro Martins of Portugal, 2-1 (14-21, 24-22, 21-6).

Women's singles — Michelle Li, Markham, Ont., won her opening match, 2-0 (21-11, 21-8) over Hungarian Laura Sarosi.

Beach volleyball

Men — Ben Saxton, Calgary, and Chaim Schalk, Red Deer, Alta., were eliminated with a 2-0 (21-12, 21-15) loss to Alexander Brouwer and Robert Meeuwsen, Netherlands.

Women — Heather Bansley, Waterdown, Ont., and Sarah Pavan of Kitchener, Ont., advanced to the quarter-finals after defeating fellow Canadians Jamie Broder, Victoria, and Kristina Valjas of Toronto, 2-0 (21-16, 21-11).

Cycling

Women's keirin — Monique Sullivan, Calgary, was sixth in her opening-round heat (11.620), and was eliminated after finishing sixth in her repechage (11.953); Kate O'Brien, Calgary, sixth in her heat (11.935) and despite placing second in her repechage (11.330), did not advance.

Diving

Women's three-metre springboard — Jennifer Abel, Laval, Que., ranked third after the semifinals with 343.45 points; Pamela Ware of Greenfield Park, Que., was ninth (318.25) — both advanced to Sunday's final round.

Golf

Men — Graham DeLaet of Weyburn, Sask., shot a three-over-par 74 in the third round and, with one day to go, is tied for 22nd, 10 shots behind the leader and seven out of the bronze position; David Hearn, Brantford, Ont., posted a 74 and stands in a tie for 44th place.

Gymnastics

Men's trampoline — Jason Burnett, Nobleton, Ont., was 14th in qualifying with 103.715 points and did not reach the final.

Rowing

Women's single sculls — Carling Zeeman, Cambridge, Ont., finished fourth in the B-final (7:28.62).

Women's eights — Canada (Caileigh Filmer, Victoria; Suzanne Grainger, London, Ont.; Natalie Mastracci, Thorold, Ont.; Christy Nurse, Georgetown, Ont.; Lisa Roman, Langley, B.C.; Christine Roper, Montego Bay, Jamaica; Lesley Thompson-Willie, London, Ont.; Antje von Seydlitz, Smithers, B.C.; Lauren Wilkinson, North Vancouver, B.C.) placed fifth in the medal race (6:06.04).

Sailing

Men's laser — Lee Parkhill, Oakville, Ont., was fourth and 13th in the day's runs and will not qualify for the medal race after ranking 25th overall (215).

Women's 49er — Dannie Boyd, Kingston, Ont., and Erin Rafuse, Halifax, finished 11th, 16th, 17th and 16th in a busy day of racing to stand 13th overall (69) after six legs.

Women's laser radial — Brenda Bowskill, Toronto, finished 10th and 15th to move up to 16th overall after the preliminary round (157), but did not advance to the medal race.

Finn class — Tom Ramshaw, Toronto, was 22nd and 20th and remains 20th overall (134) with two races remaining.

Nakra 17 — Nikola Girke of West Vancouver, B.C., and Luke Ramsay, Vancouver, placed 18th, 21st and 15th, and are ranked 17th overall with 116.

Swimming

Women's 4x100 medley relay — Canada (Kylie Masse, LaSalle, Ont.; Rachel Nicol, Lethbridge, Alta.; Penny Oleksiak, Toronto; and Chantal Van Landeghem, Winnipeg) placed fifth in the final (3:55.18).

Men's 1,500 — Ryan Cochrane of Victoria, in his final Olympic race, finished in sixth place (14:49.61).

Volleyball

Men — Canada (2-2) defeated Mexico, 3-0 (25-20, 25-13, 25-22).
